Grouping Basics (or how to not make others in your party/raid cranky)

This page will discuss the finer points of dealing with instances in a group situation. These basics should be adhered to and followed as it makes the instance runs more enjoyable (and profitable!) for everyone.

If you are unsure about how we choose the members of a Raid or event, please check out our Raid and event signups page.

Terminology

At instance start, make sure everyone knows their roles:

  • Main Tank (MT)
  • Main Assist (MA)
  • Main Healer (MH)
  • Assistant Healer (AH)
  • Puller
  • Disenchanter

Looting:

  1. No looting during combat as it is a distraction.
  2. No looting when someone is dead because they can’t get a cut of the coin AND if they’ve released, they can’t choose to roll on an item.
  3. In general, you should only loot when an fight is over and everyone is almost ready to move on to the next. You probably wouldn’t like people to loot at times that would short you, so you should offer them the same courtesy.

Loot rules:

  1. Any weapon / armor that it is an upgrade for you, roll NEED.
  2. All gems, reputation increasing items (Arcane Tomes, Fel Armaments, etc.), and BOE items roll GREED, (even blue/purple gems / items). The only exceptions should be #1, or if it has been discussed beforehand and agreed by the group (special or quest drops).
  3. All BOP items - PASS on them, an enchanter (the Disenchanter noted above) will roll GREED and DE the item if it is not NEED‘d by someone. If a shard, crystal, etc. comes up when disenchanted then everyone in the party will “/roll” for the resulting item.

Assisting:

Every group should have an MA. The MA does the triage in the fight. He selects the mob that must die first and keeps attacking it until that mob expires. Then the MA switches to the next greatest threat and pounds on it until it’s dead. If the party is consistently assisting the MA:

  1. Mobs will die quickly.
  2. No one will be taking much damage.
  3. Main Tank will keep multiple mobs angry at him and ONLY him.
  4. The healer can focus on the Main Tank and the backup healer(s) can concentrate on the MA.

If each person picks a target at random, the mobs will die slowly, the healer will be spread thin healing everyone, the tank will be forced to work overtime, franticly trying to maintain aggro of multiple mobs, and ending in a wipe, which no one wants as it adds to your repair bills, makes the instance take longer, and increases the chances for re-spawns in the instance.

So - It is wise to attack the same target as the MA at all times by making a macro to do so.

How to make an assist macro:

  1. Type “/macro” in the chat window
  2. Name it “Assist” (or something else you will remember) and choose an icon.
  3. In the textbox type “/assist MA“, where “MA” is the name of the MA.
  4. Click Complete and drag the icon onto your Hotbar.
  5. Click this button every time a target dies to acquire your next one.
